LinkedIn recently released their new Global Trends Report for 2016, which provides us with a few insights about how the recruitment industry may evolve in the next year. With these trends being considered, recruitment leaders have identified three of the top priorities for 2016. 1) Secure new clients 46% agree that growing their client base is an important priority. 72% agree that branding significantly impacts business growth. Organisations must invest in their brand to get more business. 2) Be a strategic partner 40% agree that being a strategic partner is an important priority. 43% feel confident using data to understand recruiting effectiveness and opportunities. Organisations must use  data to better advise clients. 3) Source smarter 29% agree improving sourcing techniques is an important priority. Social networks are the number one source of quality hires. Organisations should leverage social professional networks.

Coachology Get better at dealing with email Knowledge workers can spend about 40% of their day on email, not just reading and replying, but also searching for an email they want to reference. So it makes sense that we are always looking for ideas to make dealing with email faster. Heres one: Get a coach. The three biggest problems with email are: Theres too much, the quality is low, and we dont share best practices. Mike Song is an email coach, and author of The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your Email Before it Manages You. He spends his days teaching people to overcome these problems. For example, if you improve quality you get fewer emails back looking for clarification. Here are some ways to write higher quality emails: 1. Write a better subject. Tell people what kind of mail it is by using descriptions at the front such as: action, info, request, confirmed, or delivery, as in, Delivery: Bio you requested. 2. Put the whole message in the subject line. If its short, then the person wont have to even open the email. But you need to tell someone that the message ends in the subject line, so try marking the end of the message with something like this /EOM 3. Structure the body of your message well. People are not reading whole messages. They are scanning. If its a longer email, put a quick summary up top, and if there is an action required, summarize the action up top. Also, use bullets to describe the background. This will be easier for someone to scan and it will force you to be more concise. Mike coaches individuals and workplace teams on how to use email more effectively. He has worked with people at Pfizer, Hewlet Packard, and Capital One. What struck me was that he can typically save someone ten full days a year by making them more effective with email. Some of this saved time comes from the fact that email affects everything you do, because so much of your daily diet of information comes via email. So his recommendations go beyond just the email message itself. For example, people waste a lot of time looking for information. (I do this, by the way. I had a file of links to use when I wrote about email. Where are they? I dont know. It took me ten minutes just to find this one at TechDirt.) Mike describes my problem on the nose: People have a lot of overlap in terms of the folders they use and then people cant remember where they put something. So I asked him what to do. He recommended just four categories. Which I confess makes me nervous, but I cant say that my current system of ten thousand folders is working very well Okay. So here are the details of the free coaching: Two different people will get email coaching sessions with Mike. A session lasts about three hours. But (this is sort of a big but) he is going to do it at your company, so you have to be in Connecticut, New York City or Boston to get free coaching from Mike. Here are some other things. He wants to coach your team so that you all learn to send email to each other better. Mike says that most people are totally annoyed by each others email quirks, and you can decrease a lot of time spent on email by getting teams to work together to send better emails. How to Use Body Language to Influence Others When you first meet someone, whats the first thing you notice about them? Is it the things they say? Or is it the things they do before they say anything â€" like the spring in their step when they walk, or the look in their eyes when they see something (or someone) they like? If youre like most people, your answer would be the second one. Whether theyre aware of it or not, everyone â€" including your interviewers, bosses and work colleagues â€" forms impressions about you based on your body language. Thats because nonverbal cues are harder to fake compared to verbal ones. And therein lies the key to effective nonverbal communication: Sincerity. If you tell a recruiter, Im the best person for this job, your body language has to reflect it. Same goes for your daily interactions with co-workers; when you say, I can handle the presentation, no problem, youd better project confidence. And to do all these things, you need to do the following. Make Eye Contact To be fair, this is easier said than done. Stare at someone too long, and youll come across as a creep. Shift your eyes here, there and everywhere, and youll come across as untrustworthy. Carol Kinsey Goman, author of The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help â€" or Hurt â€" How You Lead, recommends a balanced approach. She says that you should make strong eye contact, but only long enough to remember the color of a persons eyes. This is applicable for job interviews as well as instances when youre meeting someone for the first time. Bear in mind the ideal length of time for eye contact depends on the situation. According to Ben Decker, chief executive officer of Decker Communications, you should maintain eye contact for 7 to 10 seconds in one-on-one conversations, and 3 to 5 seconds in group discussions. Thats long enough to let others know that theyre important to you â€" or, at least, that you acknowledge their existence. Smile Like You Mean It Remember those times when someone smiles at you, and you cant help but smile back? Apparently, flashing your pearly whites does more than spread the happiness around. According to a study from Penn State University, smiling employees are perceived as courteous, likeable and competent â€" all of which are traits found in successful people. Of course, thats assuming your smile is a genuine one. If youre just curling up your lips awkwardly, even a six-year-old can tell youre faking it. So what do you do when your job requires you to smile constantly, even after a morning of The Murphys Law Gone Horribly Wrong? Mark Waldman, author of Words Can Change Your Brain: 12 Conversation Strategies to Build Trust, Resolve Conflict, and Increase Intimacy, has an answer. In an interview with Brain World Magazine, he advises that you visualize a happy event or a dearly beloved person to turn your frown upside-down. Its simple, doable and effective. What more can you ask? Give a Firm, Vertical Handshake In a vertical handshake, your palm faces inward, as though youre about to give someone a low-five. (High-five. Low-five. Get it?) Its the safest handshake when youre greeting a complete stranger, because it indicates you see the other person as an equal, according to Barbara and Allan Pease, author of The Definitive Book of Body Language. Also, your grip should be firm enough to show confidence but light enough to let the other person know that, no, you dont want to crush their fingers to a pulp. You can also mimic whoever youre shaking hands with. If their grip is strong, use an equally strong grip. If they grip you as though your hands are made of super-delicate material, grip them lightly too. Pack Power Into Your Posture Want to instantly boost your confidence before an interview? Spread your arms and legs out like a starfish. Yes, Im serious. Amy Cuddy, an associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, says even two minutes of using expansive, open gestures will prepare you for high-stress situations. Specifically, your testosterone levels will go up by 20 percent, making you more risk-tolerant, and your cortisol levels will go down by 25 percent, making you less anxious, regardless of whether youre a man or a woman. That said, you have to use the power pose judiciously. Your boss might not appreciate your approaching his desk with an obviously forced swagger, and your colleagues might be less-than-pleased with your overly intimidating aura. Use the power pose when you need to impress someone, but take a more relaxed stance otherwise. Gesture With Your Hands Conventional wisdom states hand gestures distract from the speaker. One study says otherwise. According to human behavior consultancy Science of People, TED speakers who used hand gestures garnered higher ratings from the audience compared to those who didnt. Science of People founder Vanessa Van Edwards theorized the gestures actually made the audience more engaged, since they had something to do, i.e. look at the hand movements, other than listening to a speech. Thats good news, especially if gesturing makes you feel more relaxed. Also, you can learn more about what specific hand gestures mean here. What You See Is What You Do   As mentioned earlier, sincerity â€" or, at least, an appearance of sincerity â€" is important in nonverbal communication. The easiest way to show others you care is (surprise, surprise) to actually care. The not-so-easy-but-just-as-effective way is to do what empathetic people do: Mimic the gestures of the person youre dealing with. For example, if you notice Alice feels uncomfortable with people who sidle up to her, dont invade her personal space. Conversely, if Bob likes to lean in when hes talking to you, its okay to do the same to him. By mirroring the other person, youll be able to put yourself in their shoes, figure out the appropriate body language to use with them, and become more likeable in their eyes. One Last Thing Since body language operates on a subconscious level, youll have to practice a lot to use it to your advantage. Practice with a person whos willing to give you objective, constructive and honest feedback, so youll have a more accurate view of how you appear to others. Eventually, good nonverbal communication will be automatic to you, and hopefully push you one more step up the ladder of success.
